The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, has been sentenced to five years' imprisonment in his firearm case at a Magistrate's Court in KuGompo in the Eastern Cape province, South Africa.

This relates to an incident in which he discharged a firearm during the EFF's fifth anniversary celebrations in Mdantsane in 2018.

EFF leader Malema sentenced to five years imprisonment 

South Africa's Department of Home Affairs has clarified that holders of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP), are not eligible to apply for permanent residency automatically and must continue to remain on their current permits, which are valid until 29 May 2027.

This comes after reports that Deputy Home Affairs Minister Njabulo Nzuza had indicated that ZEP holders could now apply for permanent residence, suggesting a possible shift in government policy.

Pope Leo XIV, who is in Cameroon as part of his Apostolic journey to Africa, is expected today in Bamenda, a town in the country's English-speaking Northwest region, still recovering from years of separatist conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced at least 400 000 people.

On Wednesday, during a meeting with President Paul Biya and members of civil society, the pontiff delivered a firm message on leadership, warning that authority loses its meaning when corrupted, and urging that the chains of corruption must be broken for justice and peace to prevail.

On his part, President Biya acknowledged the country's challenges, citing terrorism, a protracted separatist crisis, and economic hardship, while maintaining that his government remains committed to unity, stability, and national development.

Pope Leo XIV to visit Cameroon's English-speaking Northwest region 

A "Free Iran March" demonstration is taking place outside the American Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa, in solidarity with the Iranian people and in support of global efforts to challenge oppression by the Iranian regime. 

The protest is expected to draw hundreds of participants, including Christians, Sudanese nationals, and members of South Africa's Jewish community, united in opposition to authoritarianism and in response to Iran's alleged violations of fundamental human rights.
