South Africa's African National Congress (ANC) turns 113 years old today, since its founding in 1912 in Bloemfontein in the country's Free State province.

The ANC is the oldest liberation movement on the continent and has been governing South Africa since 1994, playing a pivotal role in shaping the country's history.

However, the party recently faced a substantial setback in the 2024 general elections, losing its majority and prompting the formation of a government of national unity.

Uganda's opposition leader, Dr Kizza Besigye, and his aide, Obeid Lutale, have been hit with a legal setback following the dramatic imprisonment of their lawyer, Eron Kiiza. Kiiza, a member of the defence team, was sentenced to nine months in Kitalya Prison by a military court on Tuesday, for contempt of court.

His swift sentencing occurred amid chaotic scenes at the General Court Martial in Kampala.

According to witnesses, Kiiza was arrested while attempting to take his seat among other lawyers ahead of a delayed court session.

A confrontation ensued when a soldier blocked him from accessing the designated area for lawyers.
