Protests have erupted in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over proposed constitutional reforms, amid growing political tensions.

The demonstrations have been organised by several civil society organisations and citizen movements, which argue that the reforms are poorly timed given the country's ongoing security, humanitarian, and economic challenges.

The proposed reforms by President Félix Tshisekedi have also drawn strong criticism from opposition parties, which accuse him of attempting to amend the Constitution to pave the way for a third presidential term after his current mandate ends in 2028, despite the existing two-term limit.

South Africa (SA) and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation on migration, governance, and regional security following high-level diplomatic talks aimed at easing tensions and deepening relations. President Cyril Ramaphosa's Special Envoy to Nigeria and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, described the discussions as candid, constructive, and forward-looking, with a focus on rebuilding mutual trust and enhancing cooperation.

The engagements come as migration and immigration remain key issues across Africa, prompting leaders to pursue coordinated approaches to cross-border movement.

SA, Nigeria reaffirm their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation on migration

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) convened a joint committee session to discuss the worsening security and humanitarian crisis in Sudan, calling for a coordinated, African-led response to the conflict. Lawmakers heard that the war has triggered the world's largest displacement crisis, with more than 30 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and millions at risk of famine. 

The session also highlighted widespread human rights abuses, including arbitrary killings and the obstruction of life-saving humanitarian aid.

PAP discusses the worsening security, humanitarian crisis in Sudan

Human rights organisation Amnesty International is calling on the Zambian government to release journalist MacPherson Mukuka and drop all charges against him. The Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation reporter was arrested after allegedly recording and sharing a private conversation on social media.

 Amnesty says the case raises serious concerns about media freedom ahead of Zambia's general elections on the 13th of August.
