Four candidates vying for the United Nations (UN) Secretary‑General position are set to face public questioning at the organisation’s headquarters in New York this week, marking only the second time the UN has hosted such an open forum. The candidates include three from South America and Senegal’s former president, Macky Sall. His nomination, put forward by the President of Burundi, Évariste Ndayishimiye, who currently chairs the African Union, has struggled to gain backing both from the regional African bloc and within his home country.

The Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa is currently underway in Senegal. Held under the theme “Africa facing the challenges of stability, integration and sovereignty: what sustainable solutions?”, the forum brings together decision‑makers, researchers, defence and security officials, civil‑society actors and international partners.

It serves as a platform for dialogue, strategic reflection and the development of proposals on key issues affecting the continent, including integration, sovereignty, peace and development.

The Department of Health in South Africa’s Gauteng Province has issued an alert following a rise in malaria cases, warning residents to be vigilant for symptoms. The province recorded 414 cases and 11 deaths between January and March 2026 alone. The department has attributed the increase in cases to holiday travel to high‑risk areas, including Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, which has increased exposure to malaria‑carrying mosquitoes.
