As the world commemorated World Aids Day on Sunday HIV/Aids organisations and activists have called on governments to direct their resources towards new HIV infections. According to the Africa Health Research Institute young women and adolescents across the African continent continue to bear the brunt of the epidemic where some of the new HIV infections are found. An estimated 1.3 million people acquired HIV in 2023 globally. In South Africa, the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research is optimistic that a cure may be found in the next five to ten years.
