As the world commemorated World Aids Day on Sunday HIV/Aids organisations and activists have called on governments to direct their resources towards new HIV infections. According to the Africa Health Research Institute young women and adolescents across the African continent continue to bear the brunt of the epidemic where some of the new HIV infections are found. An estimated 1.3 million people acquired HIV in 2023 globally. In South Africa, the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research is optimistic that a cure may be found in the next five to ten years. The Constitutional Court of South Africa (SA) has declared invalid Parliament's December 2022 decision to reject an independent panel's report on the Phala Phala matter, referring the issue back to Parliament for reconsideration.

In 2024, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) approached the apex court seeking to overturn Parliament's move to block an impeachment inquiry against President Cyril Ramaphosa, following revelations that more than $500 000 in foreign currency had been kept at his Phala Phala farm.

While President Ramaphosa has called on South Africans to embrace solidarity with their African neighbours and the police have been active in curtailing violence, social tensions remain palpable. Are the recent outbreaks of anti-immigrant activism a signal of a broader rise in anti-migrant sentiment amongst the South African public?

Recent public opinion data from the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) suggests that this may indeed be the case.

The Henley Passport Index 2026 highlights a persistent gap in global mobility for African countries, with Seychelles, Mauritius, and South Africa leading the continent.

While several African nations recorded modest improvements, they still lag far behind global frontrunners, with the strongest African passports offering only about half the visa-free access enjoyed by the world's top-ranked countries. Southern Africa continues to dominate the continent's upper tier, hosting the highest concentration of Africa's most powerful passports.
