Twenty-three students died when their school building collapsed on them while taking their end-of-session exams, in Nigeria's Plateau State over the past weekend.

Survivors of the collapse are said to have serious to critical injuries.

More building collapses have been reported in Abuja, while rescue workers continue in the Osun State.

The government has ordered a thorough investigation into the incidents.

Activists say it is an important victory for human rights that lawmakers in The Gambia have voted to uphold the law criminalising female genital mutilation FGM.

They say this decision reinforces legal protection for women and girls and demonstrates the country's commitment to ending FGM and supporting survivors.

Gambian lawmakers on Monday upheld a 2015 ban on female genital mutilation despite pressure from religious traditionalists in the West African country, rejecting a controversial bill seeking to overturn the law after months of heated debate.

International rights groups and the United Nations has urged MPs to reject the bill, saying it threatened years of progress and would have seen The Gambia become the first country to overturn a ban on female genital mutilation (FGM).

Early election results coming out of Rwanda show incumbent president, Paul Kagame has won a landslide victory with 99 per cent of the vote.

An outcome that was widely expected.

Final results are expected by the 27th of July but could be announced sooner.
