South Africa’s Departments of Justice and Constitutional Development and International Relations and Cooperation, together with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, hosted a high-level dialogue in Pretoria on Friday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.

Adopted in 2001, the landmark framework remains a global instrument in the fight against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

South Africa’s Justice Minister and Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, Mmamoloko Kubayi, delivered the keynote address.

25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action

South Sudan President Salva Kiir has signed amendments to the country's election law, removing requirements that the completion of a permanent constitution and a national census precede elections. Kiir's office described the amendments to the National Elections Act of 2012 as "another major milestone" in preparations for the country's elections.

The South Sudan Opposition Alliance, a coalition of opposition parties and signatory to the 2018 peace agreement, has rejected the changes, saying they were made without adequate consultation among the parties to the agreement.

Members of the global progressive movement have gathered in New York to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter, ahead of the High-Level Week of the 81st UN General Assembly. The event, held on Monday evening at Riverside Church under the banner "We Shall Not Be Moved," brought together activists and international figures to celebrate the UN Charter and its principles of sovereign equality, self-determination and peaceful dialogue. 

Delivering the keynote address, South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, said the gathering provided an opportunity to reaffirm the belief that international relations must be guided by the UN Charter and that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue.

Global Progressive Movement members gathered in New York ahead of 81st UN General Assembly 

Major U.S. television networks have suspended pooled coverage of President Donald Trump after the White House decided to bar CNN, Politico and MS NOW from access. On Friday, Trump accused the three outlets of publishing "fiction or lies" about his administration.

The organisations say their reporters were denied access to the White House on Saturday. In response to the suspension, the White House has launched its own streaming channel, Trump TV, which provides a 24-hour feed featuring clips of the president.
