Zimbabwe has seen a new wave of opposition arrests in what is described as a crackdown ahead of the 44th Ordinary Southern African Development Community Summit of Heads State and Government on 17 August 2024 in Harare.

Zimbabwe's minister of police, Kazembe Kazembe, says he is aware of secret meetings inside and outside the country, adding the police ministry would not hesitate to act swiftly against those who stage demonstrations in the country.

The latest of the arrests include Opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume who is facing charges related to a June 16 incident where 78 Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists were arrested.

To share more about the police crackdowns is the Zimbabwean Youth Chair of the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) formation here in South Africa's Gauteng Province, Blessed Nyathi.

A global human rights organisation Amnesty International is calling on the Lesotho government to urgently investigate allegations of torture and unlawful killings by the army to civilians in that country.

The organisation says those suspected to be responsible must be brought to justice in fair trials and the families of the victims must be adequately compensated. Reports are that Lesotho Defence Forces (LDF) soldiers tortured at least four people and killed at least two others during the ongoing Operation Hard Fist to confiscate illegal firearms from gang members.

Amnesty calls on Lesotho to investigate allegations of torture, unlawful killings by  army

A global human rights organisation Amnesty International is calling on the Lesotho government to urgently investigate allegations of torture and unlawful killings by the army to civilians in that country. The organisation says those suspected to be responsible must be brought to justice in fair trials and the families of the victims must be adequately compensated.

Reports are that Lesotho Defence Forces (LDF) soldiers tortured at least four people and killed at least two others during the ongoing Operation Hard Fist to confiscate illegal firearms from gang members.

During an address to soldiers in early August, LDF Major General Matela Matobakele threatened lawyers and judges handling cases involving individuals arrested by the army. To get a response to these allegations Peter Ndoro spoke to Lesotho Government Spokesperson, Thabo Maketekete Sekonyela.
