As operations at the Stilfontein mine in South Africa (SA) conclude, Zimbabwean authorities are working to identify and repatriate the remains of many illegal miners who lost their lives.
This follows a months-long operation to clear the disused Buffelsfontein gold mine, which had become a hub for illegal mining activity.
Over 80 fatalities have been reported, including undocumented Zimbabwean nationals who died during intensified police crackdowns aimed at curbing illegal mining.
The mine, which housed nearly 2 000 illegal miners, was predominantly occupied by Mozambicans, followed by Zimbabweans and Basotho nationals. To provide more insight, Peter Ndoro spoke to the Zimbabwean Ambassador to SA, David Hamadziripi.
