Every August, South Africa marks Women's Month, commemorating the 1956 march by more than 20,000 women on the Union Buildings in Pretoria against apartheid-era pass laws - a moment that gave South Africa its enduring rallying cry, "you strike a woman, you strike a rock." Government, business and civil society use the month each year to reflect on how far women's rights have come, and how far they still have to go - from politics and social protection to, increasingly, the economy. This year, that conversation is playing out in boardrooms as much as in commemorations. At a business forum in Johannesburg, speakers turned their attention to the economic side of the story - unequal pay, limited access to finance and opportunity, and the continued underrepresentation of women in leadership - and called for real investment behind the month's messaging.
