As the harsh winter gripped South Africa (SA), the country's homeless population faces increased vulnerability to severe cold and adverse weather conditions.
According to Statistics SA's 2022 census, over 55 000 people are homeless nationwide, with Gauteng Province alone accounting for nearly 25 000. Tshwane holds the largest share at 18.1%, followed closely by Johannesburg at 15.6%.
In the Eastern Cape Province, severe flooding and winter weather have tragically claimed multiple lives.
