As Africa united to mark Africa Day on Monday, Freedom Park in Pretoria South Africa invited the continent and the diaspora to raise one rhythm for peace through the "Silencing the Guns - Let the Drums Roll" campaign. From interfaith prayers to the heartbeat of Pan-African drumming, this initiative calls on Africans everywhere to stand together in advancing peace, unity and the aspirations of the African Union's Agenda 2063. The gathering was a call to come and experience the richness of African heritage through powerful storytelling, vibrant music, and expressive poetry.  Channel Africa's reporter Thamo Kapisa filed this report.

Turning now to our focus on immigration and rising tensions in parts of South Africa, the March and March Movement says it has given government until the end of June to respond to concerns over undocumented migrants and what it describes as growing pressure on communities. The movement says the situation is also linked to criminal activity in some areas, including drug-related offences. Peter Ndoro spoke to Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, leader of the March and March Movement.

Being an activist is increasingly becoming risky as more human rights defenders are being ill-treated or even killed. Activists across Africa remain in fear as they build social movements, stand up for the rights of the voiceless and attempt to balance the scales of society. Over a week ago a South African activist, Thato Molosankwe was shot and killed in his home in Mahikeng meanwhile the US has sanctioned a senior Tanzanian police official over allegations linked to the "torture and sexual assault" of East African rights activists Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire last year. Peter Ndoro spoke to Dr Tendai Mbanje Researcher at the University of Pretoria.
