She has long been active in social movements tackling issues from gender and women's rights, social, economic and environmental justice issues, having started as a youth activist through her church.Today, Makoma Lekalakala is the Director for Earthlife Africa a civil society environmental justice and anti-nuclear organisation.
She has received numerous accolades along the years, including the Nick Steel Memorial: Environmentalist of the Year 2018 as well as being the dual recipient of the 2018 Goldman Environmental Prize for Africa for the work done to stop South African government's plans to build nuclear plants worth one trillion rand ($76bn).
