The Democratic Republic of Congo's former president Joseph Kabila has been sentenced to death in absentia. A local military court found Kabila guilty of including war crimes. Kabila ruled the DRC for 18 years following his father's assassination. His father Laurent-Désiré Kabila was a former rebel leader who helped to overthrow Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997. He served as President of the Democratic Republic of Congo until his assassination in 2001.
