Delegates at the United Nations Climate Change conference currently underway in Azerbaijan, located between eastern Europe and Western Asia, have approved new standards for a global carbon market- a key component to the Paris agreement, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The agreement will allow richer countries to offset carbon pollution, by investing in clean energy projects, or forests in poorer countries. It's taken years to iron out a deal.

Update-Cop29 currently underway in Azerbaijan

The Chairman of the Bidvest Group Limited in South Africa (SA), Professor Bonang Mohale says that for SA's Government of National Unity(GNU) to work it will require a collective effort, if not its set-up for failure.

Speaking to Channel Africa, Mohale says that in the May 29th polls, South Africans voted for transformation and if the three leading parties were united could have formed a government.

Mohale has crititisised the Democratic Alliance for being power hungry. He has furthermore commented on the re-election of Donald Trump in the recent United States election on what it means to South Africa and the African continent.

With Ghana's presidential election approaching this December, a new opinion poll by Accra-based research group Global InfoAnalytics places opposition leader John Dramani Mahama as the frontrunner.

The election comes as President Nana Akufo-Addo prepares to step down in January after serving the constitutional limit of two terms.  

This highly anticipated race will likely see a close contest between former president Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress, and current Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party candidate.

Three executives from Australia's Resolute Mining operating in Mali were recently detained as the country's military government tightens control over its valuable mining sector. This is the second time in just over a month that foreign mining staff have been apprehended following a similar incident with Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold.

The Resolute executives are under investigation for alleged financial crimes, though they deny the charges. With gold contributing significantly to Mali's economy, these recent moves highlight the junta's increasing scrutiny of foreign companies operating in the country.

 For more on this latest development Peter Ndoro spoke to Dr Zoumara Diarra who is a professor of Political and Legal Sciences at Mali's Bamako University.
