University of Johannesburg marks Haitian Flag Day celebrating Haiti’s legacy and African-Caribbean solidarity

The University of Johannesburg on Monday evening hosted the 223rd Anniversary Commemoration of the Haitian Flag, marking Haiti's enduring legacy as the world's first free Black republic. The event brought together diplomats, academics and members of the African and Caribbean communities to reflect on the historic ties between Haiti, Africa and the broader Diaspora. Speaking to Channel Africa on the sidelines of the commemoration, Haiti's Ambassador to South Africa, Jean Pierre Robert Pillard, highlighted the shared struggles and resilience of Haiti and South Africa, the importance of African-Caribbean solidarity, and ongoing efforts to rebuild Haiti amid security and humanitarian challenges.
