Across Africa, governments are facing difficult choices over where to spend limited public money, with rising debt and pressure on national budgets. But the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) says health spending should not simply be seen as a cost - but as an investment that can strengthen economies, create jobs and improve productivity. This week, the ECA is holding a five-day workshop in Addis Ababa, bringing together officials from Botswana, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and Togo. They are being trained to use economic data to better demonstrate the wider impact of investment in health.
