Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom Faces Succession Dispute After King Oyo’s Death

View descriptionShare

We continue with The Discourse, and we now go to Uganda. The Tooro Kingdom is facing a succession dispute following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV last month. A royal committee has selected his cousin, Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, as his successor. But the late king's mother and sister are challenging that decision, saying a 2022 will named a son as his heir. The dispute raises wider questions about customary succession, the role of royal family members, and how traditional institutions fit within modern legal and constitutional frameworks. We spoke to Godwin Toko, Ugandan lawyer, human rights activist and Deputy Team Leader at the Agora Center for Research.
