Donald Trump has won the US elections to become the 47th President United States of America, as well as becoming the first convicted felon elected to the White House.
African presidents have congratulated him on his victory, with Kenyan President William Ruto praising Trump, calling him a visionary innovative leader, while Nigerian leader Bola Tinubu expressed hopes that Trump's administration would usher in an era of "beneficial and reciprocal economic and development partnerships" between Africa and the U.S.
However, Prof Rodney Uphoff of the University of Missouri and an Extraordinary Professo at South Africa's University of the Western Cape (UWC) reflecting on Trump's re-election, describes it as both a symptom and an accelerator of America's entrenched divides. On the implications of Trump's foreign policy, Prof Uphoff says he doubts that another Trump presidency will be positive for the US and will be disastrous for Ukraine and even worse for those in Gaza.
