The Discourse: Sexual violence used to control communities amid Haiti’s gang crisis

View descriptionShare

It's time now for The Discourse, and we're turning to Haiti, where armed groups continue to control large parts of communities, with women and girls facing particularly severe risks. More than 5,500 incidents of sexual and gender-based violence were recorded in the first six months of this year, according to the United Nations. A recent analysis by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime says sexual violence is being used not only against individuals, but also to intimidate and control communities. The analysis draws lessons from Colombia's civil war, including how sexual violence was documented and addressed as part of wider efforts towards justice and accountability.
