The promotion of Intra- Africa travel, trade and business exchange has come under the spotlight at the 6th edition of the Africa Tourism leadership forum in Gaborone, Botswana.

Over 500 key tourism public and private sector leaders and other stakeholders from across Africa and the rest of the world - have gathered to share insights - and devise strategies for tourism growth under the theme shifting demand to shape the future of intra Africa travel.

The 2023 Forum has been designed to elevate dialogue around improved and favorable conditions to strengthen intra-Africa connectivity, reduce cost of air travel while stimulating demand and ensuring that intra-Africa travel markets are open to visitors and investors.

Africa’s resource wealth has long been central to the global economy. Yet the continent continues to confront a fundamental development question: why does being rich in resources not necessarily translate into industrial power, economic diversification or greater prosperity for its people? From critical minerals essential to the energy transition and advanced technologies to agricultural commodities such as shea, the challenge is not simply what Africa produces, but where value is created, who controls the supply chains and who ultimately benefits. Today, we examine the economics of resource sovereignty, the realities of industrialisation, the role of capital and financial markets, and whether greater regional cooperation can strengthen Africa’s position in the global economy. The central question is this: how can Africa move from supplying the world’s raw materials to shaping the industries, markets and economic opportunities those resources make possible? To answer some of these questions, we spoke to Development Economist, Phelisa Nkomo

The United Nations and Switzerland are hosting a sixth round of consultations in Geneva today, bringing together representatives from 22 countries and five international organisations to coordinate efforts to end the war in Sudan. Previous rounds have failed to produce a ceasefire, and this meeting is expected to seek a joint statement reaffirming commitments to peace and identifying practical steps for further diplomatic action. Neither the Sudanese Armed Forces nor the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces is attending. The African Union is also expected to discuss Sudan with the UN Security Council on Friday. We spoke to Khalid Omer Yousif, Sudan's former Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Vice-Chairman of the Sudanese Congress Party.
