South Africa's Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration has warned against the growing trend of individuals posing as government officials to conduct illegal identity checks on foreign nationals, saying some of these activities amount to extortion. The committee, which is overseeing the implementation of President Cyril Ramaphosa's five-point migration action plan, briefed the media in Pretoria on the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen migration management. The committee's chairperson, Mmamoloko Kubayi, said only authorised law enforcement officers are permitted to conduct immigration enforcement operations and urged the public not to take the law into their own hands.
