Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States - Ecowas. The 46-year-old was elected during the regional bloc's summit in Sierra Leone, taking over from President Julius Maada Bio. Faye assumes the role at a pivotal moment for West Africa, when the region is facing growing security threats. Recently Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger withdrew from the bloc, raising democratic setbacks in West Africa.

São Tomé and Príncipe's President, Carlos Vila Nova, has won a second five-year term, securing more than 55 percent of the vote and avoiding a runoff, according to preliminary results. Vila Nova ran as an independent after splitting with the party that first brought him to power. The cocoa-producing island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, about 250 kilometres off the coast of Gabon, is regarded as one of Africa's most stable democracies, but the president begins his new term facing economic challenges and a politically divided landscape.  Professor Gerhard Seibert, Research Associate at the Centre for International Studies at ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon, author of several books on the history and politics of São Tomé and Príncipe, and one of the world's leading experts on the country, joins us now to help us unpack the election result and what it means for the country's political future.

São Tomé's Vila Nova Wins Second Term Amid Economic Challenges and Political Divisions

South Africa's Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, this Monday engaged Ambassador Joanne Doornewaard of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to South Africa, where they formalised bilateral relations through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement establishes a framework for stronger collaboration and cooperation, while creating opportunities to exchange expertise and best practices in policy development and implementation.
