The South African Medical Students Union( SAMSU) says many medical students in the country who relies on the funding by government the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) are facing significant financial hardships due to a discrepancy in the funding provided by the fund.
They say despite being required to be in school for twelve months of the year, medical students only receive funding for 10 months.
As a result, students are left without allowances for January and December, creating a financial strain, especially since many must remain on campus during these months to meet academic requirements.
Marno Sands, the Deputy Secretary General of SAMSU shares more on the challenges.
