SA experts caution that the technology might deepen the digital divide

View descriptionShare

As South Africa explores the potential of satellite internet, telecommunications experts caution that the technology might deepen the digital divide rather than bridge it. While services like Starlink have received international acclaim, critics argue that satellite internet remains too costly, too restricted, and largely out of touch with the everyday needs of rural communities in the country.

Sean Shipalana, a prominent infrastructure development specialist, is among those raising the alarm. He warns that the hype around satellite connectivity may distract from more practical and sustainable solutions that could better serve underserved areas.

Shipalana spoke to Peter Ndoro to further discuss this.
