Hair loss may be easy to see, but its emotional impact often goes unnoticed.
That's according to Dr Ahmed Essop, a South African dermatologist who says alopecia affects more than just appearance, it strikes at a person's sense of identity and wellbeing.
He explains that while many assume hair thinning is a sign of ageing, the reality is different.
A quarter of men start balding before 21, and women commonly begin losing hair in their 30s.
