South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for BRICS to establish an international mechanism for the independent scientific evaluation of Artificial Intelligence, warning that technological capabilities must not outpace humanity's ability to understand, supervise and control them. A royal committee has selected his cousin, Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, as his successor. But the late king's mother and sister are challenging that decision, saying a 2022 will named a son as his heir. The dispute raises wider questions about customary succession, the role of royal family members, and how traditional institutions fit within modern legal and constitutional frameworks. We spoke to Godwin Toko, Ugandan lawyer, human rights activist and Deputy Team Leader at the Agora Center for Research.

An Afrobarometer survey covering 38 countries finds that while 64 percent of Africans still prefer democracy, only 36 percent meet the study's definition of "committed democrats" - meaning they both prefer democracy and reject authoritarian alternatives. The research also finds that fewer than half of those surveyed consider their country a democracy, while just 38 percent are satisfied with the way democracy is working.
