Report accuses South Africa of arms trade hypocrisy

View descriptionShare

South Africa stands accused of double standards in its foreign policy, preaching peace and human rights abroad, while profiting from the export of arms to countries accused of war crimes and ruled by military juntas.

A new report by the Southern Africa Litigation Centre, titled "The Great Hypocrisy of South Africa's Arms Exports," reveals that weapons made in South Africa have been sold to states under military rule - from Myanmar to Guinea, BurkinaFaso and Mali, and even to countries implicated in the war in Yemen, despite a High Court ruling meant to prevent such deals.

The report questions whether South Africa is living up to its own laws and the values it champions on the world stage.

Joining Peter Ndoro to discuss the findings is Dr AtillaKisla, International Justice Cluster Lead at the Southern Africa Litigation Centre.
