In a recent development, several prominent African political figures, including Botswana's former President Ian Khama, Tanzania's opposition leader Tundu Lissu, Mozambique's Venâncio Mondlane, and Colombia's former President Andrés Pastrana, were detained upon arrival at Luanda airport in Angola.
These leaders had been invited by Angola's main opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), to participate in events marking its 59th anniversary. Despite UNITA's assurances to the government regarding the delegation's stay, Angolan authorities blocked their entry, leading to widespread concern and allegations of political interference.
To provide more insight into this situation, is Channel Africa correspondent in Mozambique, Manuel Luamba, who has been closely monitoring these events.
