Nigeria’s Election Campaign: Tinubu Faces Pressure Over Economy, Cost of Living and Security

View descriptionShare

As campaigning for Nigeria's January elections officially got underway on Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu and his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) face a crucial test over their record in government and whether Nigerians feel their lives have improved. Tinubu is seeking a second term against 18 opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, with economic hardship, the rising cost of living and insecurity expected to dominate the campaign. Critics argue that after more than a decade of APC rule, Nigeria is poorer, more indebted and no safer, despite the Tinubu administration defending its economic reforms as necessary to restore stability and attract investment. To unpack how the political narratives are developing and what voters are likely to prioritise, Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to Fredrich Idehai, founder and CEO of The Diplomatic Correspondent in Nigeria
