Naval personnel allegedly fired upon a civilian boat: Reports

View descriptionShare

Reports emerging from Mozambique's Cabo Delgado Province say that on Friday, August 22, naval personnel allegedly fired upon a civilian boat sailing between Macomia and Ibo-believing it had been hijacked by insurgents-without verifying the claim. Witnesses say between five and seven civilians, mainly fishermen carrying salt, were killed. This is the second such incident in under two months, heightening fears of erratic military behaviour in the air and at sea in the region. To help us make sense of what happened and what this might signal for Mozambique's counter?insurgency operations, we are joined live by Piers Pigou, a consultant with The Focus Group.
