In a dramatic political turnaround, Malawi's former president, Arthur Peter Mutharika, has reclaimed the presidency with a commanding first-round win, securing around 57% of valid votes, while incumbent Lazarus Chakwera drew about 33 %.
As part of his incoming administration, Mutharika has struck a political alliance with the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), appointing its leader, Enock Chihana, as second vice president.
