Mondlane told media that based on figures collected by his delegates at polling stations, he is leading after last week's election. Preliminary results are expected to be declared on Saturday, and full official results 15 days after the poll. Libya has been grappling with political fragmentation and instability since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, leading to years of division between rival factions.

After more than a decade of turmoil, including a failed election attempt in 2021, talks happening in Morocco have brought together delegations from two key legislative bodies-the High Council of State in Tripoli and the House of Representatives in Benghazi.

In their discussions, they have agreed to work with the United Nations to pave the way for elections and form a national unity government, with a focus on institutional and security reforms.

However, scepticism remains among Libyans about whether these political leaders will genuinely cooperate for a peaceful resolution.
