The 1974 landmark agreement ended the struggle for independence from colonial rule, it was the begining of the triumph for self-determination and sovereignty. The historical significance of the holiday has taken on renewed importance as the country balances honoring its liberation heroes with addressing current security issues, including regional instability in northern areas like Cabo Delgado. Morocco's Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) has formed a four-party governing coalition alongside the nationalist Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, and the Party of Progress and Socialism . Led by Prime Minister Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri-the first female head of government in Moroccan history-the incoming centrist and moderate-left alliance holds 207 seats in the 395-member House of Representatives, crossing the 198-seat threshold required for a parliamentary majority. The block is finalizing its cabinet lineup for royal approval amid pressure to mitigate a severe cost-of-living crisis, and address high youth unemployment. Equatorial Guinea says it is taking steps to expand access to reliable, affordable electricity, particularly in rural areas, while modernising its energy infrastructure.The country's Minister of Mines, Hydrocarbons and Energy, Antonio Oburu Ondó, says the government is working to connect more households and businesses to the electricity grid. Speaking on the sidelines of African Energy Week 2026 in Cape Town, he also outlined investment opportunities for African and international energy companies. Innocent Semosa reports.

Nigeria's National Human Rights Commission says it is concerned about continuing reports of mass abductions in Niger State, where families are distressed over the prolonged captivity of their loved ones. In its September report, released on Wednesday, the commission says it recorded more than 338-thousand human rights violations through its offices across the country. It has called on security agencies to step up efforts to protect affected communities, rescue those abducted and bring the perpetrators to justice. Thuto Ngobeni reports.
