As the IMF Board of Executive Directors met on Monday, the Fund reportedly voted to impose upfront public spending cuts on countries borrowing from the institution. Campaigners have warned that the move could trigger immediate price increases for food, electricity, fuel and other essentials. They are urging the board to reject what they describe as a return to structural adjustment under the guise of "frontloaded fiscal adjustment", and to ensure its programmes do not exacerbate inequality.  For more on this, Nhlanhla Mahlangu spoke to Martha Tukahirwa, Regional Coordinator for Africa at the Fight Inequality Alliance.
