Malawi's opposition party, the People's Progressive Movement (PPM), held a press conference on Wednesday to unveil its new campaign initiative titled "Voice of Reason and Hope for a Better Malawi", as the country gears up for its General Elections this September.
Malawi remains one of the world's poorest nations, with an economy heavily reliant on agriculture a sector that employs over 80% of the population and remains highly vulnerable to climate-related shocks. At the briefing, PPM President and former Minister of Trade and Industry, Mark Katsonga Phiri, challenged the prevailing narrative that Malawi is a poor country, pointing instead to the nation's rich mineral resources as a foundation for prosperity.
Katsonga Phiri spoke to Asanda Beda to unpack the key takeaways from the conference and share his party's vision and strategic direction as the September 2025 elections approach.
