Elections are taking place in Malawi, with polling stations having opened at 6am CAT and millions registered voters are to choose a new president and parliament.
Seventeen candidates are vying for the presidency, including the current head of state, Lazarus Chakwera, and two of his predecessors, Peter Mutarika and Joyce Banda.
This is the first national vote since a 2019 presidential election was nullified and re-done a year later because of widespread irregularities.
