Madagascar marks 66 years of Independence, commemorating its liberation from French colonial rule. In 1960, the country gained its freedom from colonial rule and began building the Malagasy republic. A historic milestone marking the end of over six decades of colonization. Philibert Tsiranana became Madagascar's first president, serving from 1959 to 1972 and guiding the nation through its formative years as a sovereign state.
