Johannesburg Faces 'Day Zero' Conditions Amid Deepening Water Crisis

South Africa's most populous city and economic hub, Johannesburg, is facing a deepening water crisis, with civil society group WaterCAN warning that parts of the city are already living under what it calls "Day Zero conditions." Residents in several suburbs have been without running water for weeks, not due to drought, but because of failing infrastructure and management challenges. WaterCAN is now calling for the crisis to be declared a national disaster, saying urgent intervention is needed to protect access to water as a basic human right.
