Medical experts warn that Hospital Acquired Infection or HAI, will become the leading cause of human death. HAI affects patients admitted to a hospital or other health-care facility, and is caused by disinfectant resistance - which not many people are aware of. According to the World Health Organisation, 53 to 70% of patients who acquire HAI are likely to die.

He spoke on the need to fight disinfectant resistance, a discussion held this week by PMB health and Safety Services at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg.

The World Health Organisation says it hopes the TUMANI vaccine trials currently underway in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC will be able to respond to the urgent scientific questions regarding the current outbreak of the ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus disease. TUMANI,  which means hope in Swahili,  is a clinical trial, designed so that several vaccine candidates could be evaluated within one research framework, using a ring-vaccination approach involving contacts of people with confirmed disease. The trials are led by the government of the DRC, integrated into the outbreak response and managed by the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale, the national public health and biomedical research institute. WHO hopes DRC’s TUMANI vaccine trials will help accelerate the fight against the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara has officially ended its operations and entered a liquidation phase after a diplomatic deadlock at the UN Security Council over the weekend. The mission, which had monitored a ceasefire since 1991, expired at midnight on Saturday following reciprocal vetoes from the United States and Russia, A resolution proposed by the U.S. sought to extend the mission for one year, establishing Morocco's autonomy plan as the exclusive framework for future negotiations and eliminating the term "Referendum" from the mission's official title. Russia vetoed this proposal, stating it disregarded the interests of the Polisario Front and eliminated the possibility of self-determination. A counter-resolution from Moscow to extend the mandate under its current terms was also vetoed by Washington. The termination of the mandate leaves the disputed territory without an active ceasefire monitor or neutral buffer for the first time in thirty years, raising the risk of renewed armed conflict between Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front.
