But its historical links to political power, as well as its association with particular ethnic identities, have become increasingly contentious. We spoke to Dereje Melese Liyew, a lecturer and researcher in political science and international relations at Debre Markos University, has examined the links between religion, ethnicity, politics and violence in Ethiopia.
