Ethiopia's Orthodox Tewahedo Church, one of the country's oldest and most influential institutions, has faced growing hostility in recent years, including attacks on churches, clergy and worshippers. The Church has played a central role in Ethiopia's political, cultural and religious life for more than 1,600 years. But its historical links to political power, as well as its association with particular ethnic identities, have become increasingly contentious. We spoke to Dereje Melese Liyew, a lecturer and researcher in political science and international relations at Debre Markos University, has examined the links between religion, ethnicity, politics and violence in Ethiopia.
