High levels of unemployment in African economies have led to the growth of the informal economy as more and more people seek ways to make eke out a living outside formal employment.

 About 80% of employment in Sub-Saharan Africa happens in the informal sector because of lack of adequate economic growth to create jobs and financial and regulatory barriers to starting formal businesses.
