Corruption Watch has filed a complaint with South Africa's Public Protector over the failure of the Farm Worker Equity Schemes (FWES).
The anti-corruption body says the government initiative, meant to empower farm workers through shared ownership in farms, has failed due to corruption and mismanagement. Melusi Ncala, Senior Researcher and Project Lead at Corruption Watch, says officials and private interests hijacked the scheme, leaving workers without the promised benefits. The complaint is backed by the Surplus People Project and the Legal Resources Centre, who've long advocated for farm worker rights.
Ncala joins us now on the line to further discuss this.
