Ambassador and African Union Commissioner, Albert Muchanga says the African Growth and Opportunity Act - AGOA is important to Africa's structural transformation and the continent's development when looking at the impact of the scheme across the continent's sector.

Muchanga was addressing the African Trade Ministers' Consultative Meeting at the first day of the AGOA forum taking place in Nasrec, south west of Johannesburg.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is to deliver the keynote address at the official opening of the forum.

South Africa (SA) is commemorating the centenary of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, the esteemed anti-apartheid revolutionary and founding president of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC).

Born on December 5, 1924, in Graaff-Reinet, Sobukwe was a pivotal figure in the nation's liberation struggle. To honor his legacy, the Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum, in collaboration with partners such as the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Trust, is hosting a landmark event today at the Botanical Gardens in Graaff-Reinet.

This commemoration features dialogues with thought leaders, cultural performances, and reflections on Sobukwe's philosophy. Joining Peter Ndoro to discuss this further is Dr. Jane Mufamadi, CEO of Freedom Park.

SA commemorates centenary of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe

In a significant escalation of political tensions in South Sudan, First Vice President Riek Machar and his wife, Interior Minister Angelina Teny, were reportedly placed under house arrest on March 26.

According to the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO), an armed convoy led by top security officials, including the defense minister, entered Machar's residence in Juba, disarmed his bodyguards, and detained the couple. The SPLM-IO asserts that this action effectively nullifies the 2018 peace agreement that ended the country's five-year civil war.

The United Nations (UN) has expressed deep concern, warning that South Sudan stands on the brink of relapsing into widespread conflict. International bodies, including the United States Bureau of African Affairs, have called for restraint and urged President Salva Kiir to release Machar to prevent further escalation.
