South Africa says talks with the United States are continuing over preferential access to the US market for its exports under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola says the US remains an important market, particularly for South Africa's automotive and agricultural sectors. He was speaking at Wits University in Johannesburg during a public lecture on South Africa's priorities in a changing global order, marking the launch of the Global Africa Research Initiative. South Africa and US continue AGOA trade talks as Pretoria seeks preferential market access for key exports

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly adopted a non-binding resolution calling for an end to the US economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba. It is the 34th time the Assembly has passed such a resolution since 1992. South Africa supported the resolution and called for stalled talks between Washington and Havana to resume amid worsening humanitarian conditions in Cuba. The vote follows a heated exchange between Cuban and US representatives at the Assembly on Tuesday. Sherwyn Bryce-Pease reports from New York.
