Africa debates textile rules as Basel Convention changes threaten jobs

Deliberations at the Twelfth Session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, have spotlighted growing concerns over the future of Africa's second-hand clothing trade amid proposed changes under the Basel Convention. The forum, convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa last week, comes as discussions consider classifying second-hand textiles as controlled or hazardous waste, a move that could disrupt supply chains and threaten millions of livelihoods.
