Last week South Africa marked Child Protection Week to raise awareness of issues affecting children and their general wellbeing.
One of the stories that emerged was a research that says approximately 1-in-7 children have a treatable mental health condition but most will carry the burden through to adulthood due to South Africa’s chronic lack of specialists and facilities to support their unique needs.
To shine the spotlight on this under-reported problem, Luyanda Maome spoke to Dr. Alicia Porter, a board member of the South African Society of Psychiatrists.
