The virtual Lives in the Balance Summit convened this week with the focus on delivering for women and children in humanitarian and conflict settings. The event was organised by the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, PMNCH, for the 4th time, and highly attuned to current events. It convened as the world enters the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, while witnessing increased climate related shocks and feeling the impact of the crisis in Ukraine. Somalia’s humanitarian situation deteriorates rapidly

United Nation humanitarians raised the alarm earlier this week, over frightening levels of child hunger in northeast Nigeria that are linked to more than a decade of violence by non-State armed groups.

In the three states where needs are greatest, Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, more than 1.7 million children under five, are already at risk of serious malnutrition. With more, here's the UN's Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Matthias Schmale, talking to UN News's Daniel Johnson…

UN alarmed at level of child hunger in northeast of Nigeria

The leaders of the BRICS group of nations are meeting this year amid major shifts in the geopolitical order.

The group, which owes its name to the initials of its five member states, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa is holding its annual summit on Thursday, but without much fanfare or huge expectations.

Talks will also be held in a virtual format, for the third consecutive year. The Summit will be chaired by President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China, as Chair of BRICS for 2022, under the theme "Foster High-quality BRICS Partnership; Usher in a New Era for Global Development”.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa  delivered a pre-recorded message at the opening ceremony of the BRICS Business Forum.
