South Africa's Constitutional Court rules on Phala Phala matter

View descriptionShare

South Africa's political landscape has once again been thrust into the spotlight following a landmark Constitutional Court ruling on the Phala Phala matter. The court found that Parliament acted unlawfully when it failed to refer the Section 89 independent panel report on President Cyril Ramaphosa to an impeachment committee. In response, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has formally demanded that Parliament immediately implement the judgment and establish an impeachment committee without delay. The ruling revives scrutiny over the controversial Phala Phala scandal, which centres on allegations linked to the theft of undeclared foreign currency from President Ramaphosa's Limpopo farm in 2020. Opposition parties argue the judgment is a major victory for constitutional accountability, while Parliament now faces mounting pressure to act swiftly on the court's directive. For more we are now joined on the line by Nqobile Mhlongo, an EFF member of Parliament.
